Assistant and Fellowship Opportunities for Graduate and Undergraduate Students in
Computer Science at Florida International University
Florida International University (FIU), a public university located in Miami, Florida, is ranked by the
Carnegie Foundation as a Research University with High Research Activity. The School of
Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS) is a designated program of excellence at FIU. 1,200
students are enrolled in its B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs in Computer Science and
Information Technology. The following opportunities provide support for SCIS students to conduct
research in one of more than thirty clusters led by our world-class faculty members.

- Graduate Assistantships (GAs) are offered to Ph.D. students for up to 5 years. A GAship requires
teaching and research duties for 20 hours per week; these positions include a base stipend of
$18,000 for 12 months plus an in-state tuition waiver for up to 24 credits per year. GAs receive a
base stipend increase of $2,000 after passing the Ph.D. candidacy (qualifying) exam and another
$2,000 increase after passing the preliminary (proposal) exam.
- Research Assistantships (RAs) are offered by individual faculty members from their funded
research projects. RAs receive benefits similar to those of GAships.
- SCIS's GAANN fellowships, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, are offered to
outstanding Ph.D. students for up to 3 years. Each GAANN fellowship include an annual stipend
of up to $30,000 plus an in-state tuition waiver and other benefits that total over $12,000 per year.
- FIU's University Graduate School (UGS) offers highly competitive Presidential Fellowships (PF)
and Presidential Enhancement Fellowships (PEF) to outstanding incoming Ph.D. students. UGS
pays each PF $20,000 plus an in-state tuition waiver for 2 years. SCIS supplements each PF with
additional $5000 annually as a reward. UGS pays each PEF $10,000 plus in-state tuition waiver.
SCIS supplements each PEF with additional $15,000 annually as a reward.
- FIU's UGS offers a limited number of Dissertation Year Fellowships (DYF) to outstanding final
year Ph.D. students. Each DYF carries a stipend of $18,000 plus an in-state tuition waiver; SCIS
supplements the DYF to maintain each Ph.D. student.s current stipend level.
- Teaching assistantships (TAs) are offered to M.S. students who assist in teaching for minimum 10
hours per week; these assistantships include a minimum stipend of $3,750 for 9 months plus an
out-of-state tuition waiver which enables recipients eligible to pay only in-state tuition, a savings
of over $500 per credit hour.
- The School's NSF Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) grant provides
international research and industry experiences. Graduate and undergraduate students receive
cultural and language training. All travel, housing, and other costs will be paid while students
visit the foreign sites. Stipends up to $30,000 will be awarded.
- The School's NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site provides research
experience to undergraduate students during a summer program, which includes a $4,800 stipend
and travel support to attend conferences and professional or research meetings.
