Data Management Systems Research - Past, Present and Future

And Insights into the Funding Process at National Science Foundation

 Dr. Le Gruenwald

Program Director
Division of Information and Intelligent Systems
National Science Foundation

Abstract

The advancements in Data Management Systems research have greatly contributed to the realization of many real-world applications, ranging from health-care information systems, terrorism databases, to earth observing systems. In doing so, they have deeply impacted not only Computer Science, but also many other fields of study. The first part of the talk will discuss the evolution of Database Management Systems research - their past, present and future - their major achievements and new opportunities for the 21st century. The talk will then examine the relationship between research in Data Management Systems and research in other areas of Intelligent Information Systems, Computer Science and Science - the impacts that one would have on the other and how they would facilitate each other in achieving their individual goals. The second part of the talk will provide insights into the funding process at National Science Foundation.
