Undergraduate Programming Competition

2008-02-29 in ECS 141

Contratulations to the winners of the undergraduate programming competition held last week by the Student ACM chapter:

1st: Kartigay Gupta
2nd: Danil Flores

Contestants were given a set of 6 programming problems from the ACM International Programming Competition archives. The contestants worked to solve as many problems as possible in a 3-hour time period, submitting their code to the panel of judges using the PC^2 judging software.

We really want to encourage more students to get this type of experience. Employers and research groups like to have students on their teams who are good problem solvers. Whether you win or not, competition can greatly help to sharpen your skills. Mario Consuegra, Jeremy Conn, and Kip Irvine served as judges.

LEGO Mindstorms Demonstration

2008-02-15 in EC

Every year, the College of Engineering and Computing holds a huge event called the Engineering Gala. They bring in busloads of elementary, middle-, and high-school students, to introduce them to FIU's facilities, faculty, students, and research. As part of this event, three students in the ACM Robotics interest group (SIG) demonstrated the LEGO Minstorms robot. A group of gifted elementary school students from Sweetwater Elementary school were particularly engaged, since they had used the Mindstorms in their own classroom. Mike Oltmans, assisted by Lydia Alaimo and Eric Guerra did an outstanding job of communicating with the students at this event.

The General Interest meeting for the Special Interest Groups was a great success! Twenty-five people attended, and everyone seemed very enthusiastic about the Special Interest Groups!
