Advising Conference Room

Troubleshooting Tips

There are 2 ways to power on the monitor.

  1. With the “Remote”:
    • The “Remote” is being held at the front desk with the student assistant.
  2. Without the remote:
    • There are buttons on the back of the monitor. The location of these buttons can be found using the labels which are in front of the monitor. (See image below) Tech Support
    • The power button is circled in red. The buttons are on the back of the monitor approximately 3 inches above its label.
Connecting wirelessly to screen share

Once the monitor is on, use the input with AirMedia. This will provide an IP address and display further instructions for students to complete the screen share process.

Connecting to Zoom meetings
  • Use the input with the Mac PC for Zoom. Be sure to power on the mouse and keyboard.
  • The mouse takes appx 3 minutes to sync. Please be patient.
  • Be sure to power off the mouse and keyboard once you are done.

Webspace

The Knight Foundation School of Computing & Information Sciences provides our students with a webspace available to host your own website. Create a directory called “public_html” in your U: drive or UNIX home directory and place the website files in there.

Your website is accessible as:  https://www.aul.fiu.edu/~yourUserName

On Ocelot:

# chmod 711 ~

This sets your home directory world searchable

# chmod 755 ~/public_html

This sets your public_html directory world readable

Need to Recover a File?

Did you accidentally delete a file from your home directory (U: drive)? Do you need to restore a file from an earlier point in time? We strongly urge our students and faculty to store your data in your home directory (U: drive). This network drive is backed up regularly and snapshots of your home directory are taken daily every morning.

If you need to restore a file, follow the steps below:

  1. SSH to the server where your home directory lives. Generally, faculty, staff, and graduate students are on bear.cs.fiu.edu. Undergraduate students are on buffalo.cs.fiu.edu.
  2. For Faculty and Staff and Graduate students – Once you are logged in to bear.cs.fiu.edu, type the following command: cd ../../.zfs/snapshot/n-backup-YYYYMMDD/users/[username] Where YYYYMMDD is the date you would like to go back to and [username] is your username.
  3. For Students – Once you are logged in to buffalo.cs.fiu.edu, type the following command: cd ../../.zfs/snapshot/n-backup-YYYYMMDD/homes/[username] Where YYYYMMDD is the date you would like to go back to and [username] is your username.

There you will find your home directory as it was at the time of the snapshot that day. If you would like to restore a file or folder, simply type:

# cp [filename] ~

# cp -r [folder] ~

That will copy a file from the snapshot location to your home directory. If you are copying a folder, you must use the ‘-r’ option.

I do not know or have forgotten my password

Send an email to request@cis.fiu.edu and the staff can assist you with resetting your password.

How do I change my Linux password?

Once your logged in, open a terminal and type ‘yppasswd’.

How do I change my Windows password?

Once your logged in, press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and select the option that says “Change a password”.

It takes me a long time to login to the Windows PCs. What can I do to fix this?

The Knight Foundation School of Computing & Information Sciences uses roaming profiles. Roaming profiles allow a user’s desktop and application settings to follow them no matter which workstation they login to on the domain. This roaming profile is downloaded to the computer when you login and uploaded back to the server when you log off. The reason it takes you a long time to login is that you have a lot of data in your roaming profile.

Your roaming profile lives in a hidden directory in your home directory called “.ad-profile-win10”. In Windows, C:\Users\ is your Roaming Profile. The most common culprits for slow logins are Dropbox and virtual machines. When installed incorrectly, these can add numerous gigabytes worth of data to your roaming profile which translates to a substantial login time.

The contents of this folder should not be modified while you are logged in to a Windows PC. You will need to SSH in to one of our Unix servers and move or delete the offending folders and or files from your roaming profile.

My credentials work on the Linux machines but not the Windows PCs or vice-versa

There are two sets of login credentials. One set is for the Windows PCs and Macs and the other is for the Linux machines. If this is your first time logging in to one of the systems, your username is your FIU username. Your FIU username is the first part of your email address before the ‘@fiu.edu’ and in the form: jdoe001. Your password is the standard initial password which is the initial of your first name, followed by your Panther ID, and the initial of your last name.

For example: A student named ‘John Doe’ with a Panther ID of ‘1234567’ would be ‘j1234567d’.

Account INformation

Undergraduate Students

Students enrolled in Knight Foundation School of Computing & Information Sciences courses are automatically given an account each semester. You can use your account to login to the Windows PCs, Macs, or Linux machines in the John C. Comfort Laboratory (JCCL) undergraduate lab located in CASE 241. This access is granted for the duration of the semester only.

Your username is your FIU username. Your FIU username is the first part of your email address before the ‘@fiu.edu’ and in the form: jdoe001. If you do not know your FIU username, log into MyFIU, select Main Menu Campus Solutions Self Service Campus Personal Information Email Addresses. You will see your ‘Campus’ email address in the form: jdoe001@fiu.edu. The characters before ‘@fiu.edu’ is your FIU username.

Your initial password is the first initial of your first name, followed by your Panther ID, and the first initial of your last name. For example: A student named ‘John Doe’ with a Panther ID of ‘1234567’ would be ‘j1234567d’.

Note: If you registered late for a class, your account will be created within the next 24 hours after you have registered. Each semester your JCCL password is reset to the initial password. All accounts will expire on the last day of classes and it is your responsibility to maintain a backup of your computer files.

Advising FAQs

I have taken a prerequisite for a course at another school. Why does Panther Soft report that I am missing the prerequisite?

Most likely the transfer course will need to be evaluated.  The system will recognize the prerequisite if the transfer course is found to be equivalent to an FIU course after it is evaluated.

How do I access my Panther Degree Audit (PDA)?

The Panther Degree Audit (PDA) can be accessed on my.fiu.edu under the ‘Academics’ drop down menu.

MyFIU -> Academic Advising tile -> Degree Audit -> Go to Panther Degree Audit

What is the difference between a dual degree and a second major?

A dual degree is exactly what it says: you get two separate degrees and diplomas. You must complete all the requirements for the two-degree programs. In addition, you must complete at least 30 more credits beyond the minimum required for the first degree. If the first degree requires 120 credits, then you will need at least 150 to earn the second degree. If the first degree requires 128 credits, then you will need at least 158 credits to earn the second degree.

A second major is not always available. Some majors will require a second degree, instead. You must complete all the degree requirements for both majors. The difference is that the minimum number of credits required for the two majors is the same as the number of credits for the first major. If the first major requires 120 credits, then you will need at least 120 to earn both majors. If the first major requires 128 credits, then you will need at least 128 credits to earn both majors.

Upon successful completion of the requirements of the two majors, the student will be awarded one degree and a notation denoting both majors will be entered on the transcript.

You may earn a dual degree or a second major in IT and CS.

If you want the second major option, then declare your other major first, then see a Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences adviser to declare the second major.

If you want the dual degree option, then declare one degree first, then see an adviser from the other degree program to declare the second degree.

How can I take a course at another school to meet FIU requirements?

To take a course at another school, you must fill out the Transient Student Application.

  1. Taking a course at another school is only allowed when you will be out of town for a semester or to complete some UCC courses or if there are no class sections open.
  2. Courses cannot be taken at another school during the final 30 credits of your degree.
  3. Go to https://www.floridashines.org/succeed-in-college/take-a-course-at-another-school
  4. Go to “Apply or Check Application Status Now”.
  5. Create the PIN/Password on your My FIU account.
    • Click the ‘Profile’ tile
    • At the Menu select ‘Personal Identification Number’.
  6. You will receive an approval or denial from FIU via email.
  7. Contact the other school to complete the transient student request.

Please be mindful that these transfer courses will satisfy the FIU course requirement with a passing grade but will not affect your FIU GPA.

What is Academic Warning, Probation and Dismissal?

Warning

An undergraduate student whose cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 will be placed on warning, indicating academic difficulty.

Probation

An undergraduate student on warning whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 will be placed on probation, indicating serious academic difficulty. The College/School of the student on probation may indicate the conditions which must be met in order to continue enrollment.

Dismissal

An undergraduate student on probation whose cumulative and semester GPAs fall below a 2.0 will automatically be dismissed from his/her program and the University. An undergraduate student will not be dismissed prior to attempting a minimum of 20 semester hours of coursework.

The student has ten working days to appeal the dismissal. This appeal must be made in writing to the dean designee of the College or the School in which the student is admitted. The dismissal from the University is for a minimum of one year. After one year, the student may apply for re-admission to the University in the same or a different program or register as a non-degree seeking student. Dismissed students applying for re-admission or registering as non-degree seeking students are placed on academic probation.

What is the Forgiveness Policy?

The Forgiveness Policy allows students to retake a limited number of classes for a higher grade.

https://onestop.fiu.edu/classes/grade-forgiveness/

Through the Forgiveness Policy, a student may retake a class to earn a higher grade and raise their GPA if the following conditions are met. The student must:

  • Have completed the course earning less than a ‘C’ grade
  • Retake the same course to receive a higher grade
  • Submit the Grade Forgiveness Request on MyFIU once the ew grade is posted

How to Submit

  • Login to MyFIU. See Access MyFIU for help.
  • Select the ‘Student Tools’ tile and then the ‘Student E-Forms’ tile.
  • Select ‘Student Records’ from the menu on the left and click ‘Grade Forgiveness Form’
  • Carefully read the guidelines provided and click ‘I Agree’
  • Under the ‘Grade(s) Forgiven’ section, select the course with the grade you would like to keep from the ‘Repeated Attempt’ dropdown menu and the course with the grade you would like to replace from the ‘Original Attempt’ menu. ‘Total Attempts’ will include the pending attempt you are submitting.
  • Carefully read the information provided at the bottom of the page and click on the checkbox.
  • Click ‘SUBMIT’ button at the bottom of the page.
  • A message will display that the request was successfully submitted.

I have taken some of the UCC courses at another school. Can they be used in place of the UCC courses at FIU?

They can be used if they are equated (are equivalent) to UCC courses.  You could submit the syllabi to your assigned advisor.  Your advisor will send them for evaluation to find out if they could be approved to be equivalent to FIU courses.

I have an AS degree. Will I need to take courses other than those required for the major?

Yes. The AS degree does not require students to take enough classes outside their area of concentration to meet the University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements. Please review the UCC in your Panther Degree Audit (PDA) or contact your assigned advisor.

How many of my credits can be transferred from a two-year school?

From a two-year school, like a state college, it is possible to transfer 60 credits.

All of your transfer courses will transfer if you earned at least a D, but they will only count as 60 credits. In other words, if you took 80 credits worth of courses and they were all equivalent to FIU courses, then all the courses would be applied to your FIU transcript, but they would only count as 60 FIU credits.

This means that you would still need to complete at least 60 credits at FIU in order to graduate with a degree from FIU.

I do not speak a foreign language, but I took foreign language classes in High School. Do I need to take foreign language classes at FIU?

Any student who was admitted with a foreign language deficiency must successfully complete two semesters of sequential instruction in one foreign language prior to graduation. So, if you passed two years of one language in High School, then you do not need to take any foreign language classes at FIU.

https://transfer.fiu.edu/transfer-101/graduation-requirements/

How can I view the list of courses that are being offered for the upcoming semester?

Courses that are being offered for an upcoming semester are only searchable when the schedules are posted.  Do a class search in Panther Soft.

https://onestop.fiu.edu/classes/register-for-classes/

To see the classes that you need to finish your requirements, use the Panther Degree Audit (PDA).

MyFIU -> Academic Advising tile ->Degree Audit -> Go to Panther Degree Audit

From the PDA, click on a course that you need. From the next page, click the View Sections button, then select the desired semester.

I already speak a foreign language; will this fulfill the language requirement?

If you are proficient in a foreign language (can read, speak, and write) then there are several options available for fulfilling the language requirement.

  1. You may take the German, French or Spanish CLEP exam.
  2. You may take the FLATS exam (for most foreign languages).
  3. You may take an intermediate course in your language.

I transferred over 60 credits. Why were only 60 credits accepted?

The maximum amount of transfer credits that can be applied toward the credits counter is 60.  Since students must complete at least 120 credits this means that you will need to earn at least 60 credits at FIU.

What happens when my GPA falls below 2.0?

When your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 for the first time you will be placed on Academic Warning. If your cumulative GPA does not reach 2.0 at the end of the next semester then you will be placed on Academic Probation.

If you are on Academic Probation then you must maintain a 2.0 GPA or above for the courses you take that semester. If your semester GPA falls below 2.0, then you will be dismissed from FIU.

How can I find the UCC requirements online?

How can I find the FIU Undergraduate catalog online?

I am transferring from another school. Do I have to complete all the prerequisites before being admitted to FIU?

You can be admitted to FIU without completing all prerequisites. Any missing prerequisites become additional required courses.

I can’t register because I have a hold, but my GPA is above 2.0.

You may have a Preliminary Degree Check or Advising hold. Please contact your assigned adviser through PSN for assistance.

After I complete all the courses required for my major and UCC requirements, will I be able to graduate?
