Biography

Dr. Kiavash Bahreini is an Associate Teaching Professor at the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences at FIU, where he has served since December 2022. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Open University of the Netherlands in 2015 and his M.Sc. in Computer Engineering from Eastern Mediterranean University in 2008. He is a member of IEEE, ACM, and AAAS. Dr. Bahreini teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses. At the undergraduate level, he teaches Computer Programming, Operating System Principles, Logic for Computer Science, Database Management Systems, and Advanced Database Management Systems. At the graduate level, he teaches Software Design, Advanced Database Systems, and Principles of Database Systems. He has developed three courses for graduate and undergraduate electives focusing on Agentic AI, Generative AI, and Large Language Models. He actively integrates generative AI tools into his teaching methodology, utilizing Harvard University's PingPong platform—an LLM-based teaching and learning system that enables the creation of custom AI bots for educational tasks. He has also developed an AI-Powered Personalized Learning Assistant using Python, Flask, Google Gemini API, and LangChain with RAG implementation, which provides 24/7 student support, tracks individual learning progress, adapts teaching styles based on student history, and offers data-driven insights to help students visualize their progress. His courses leverage these AI tools for virtual teaching assistance, student engagement, and personalized learning experiences. He serves as Google Developer Group Advisor at FIU and was co-instructor for the Google Tech Exchange Program in Spring 2024 and 2025, where he taught technical interview preparation and GenAI applications in software engineering to talented Hispanic/Latinx and Black students. His research focuses on generative AI, large language models, agentic AI systems, and AI-enhanced education. He actively collaborates on curriculum transformation efforts at FIU, integrating GenAI tools across computer science courses. From 2015 to 2019, Dr. Bahreini was a key member of the RAGE project, a €9 million EU Horizon 2020 initiative with 19 partners across 10 European countries, representing one of Europe's largest successfully delivered computer science projects. His academic career includes research and faculty positions at the University of Twente, University of Amsterdam, Open University of the Netherlands, and Fontys University of Applied Sciences. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications.
