From FIU to American Express: Computing grad talks path to success

Career development, News, Student Highlight

Florida International University graduate Javier Salgueiro, who earned his B.S. in Computer Science from FIU in 2024, has seamlessly transitioned into the FinTech world as a software engineer at American Express. Salgueiro’s journey—from arriving in the U.S. from Venezuela at age 16, supporting his family through multiple jobs while studying part‑time at Broward College, to excelling at FIU—highlights his resilience and dedication. At FIU’s Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences, he found inspiration in courses on machine learning, AI, human–computer interaction, and blockchain, crediting professors Richard Whittaker, Gregory Murad Reis, and Kianoosh Boroojeni for igniting his passion and preparing him for career‑launching projects. Engaging in campus clubs like CodePath, INIT, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers enabled him to refine technical, interviewing, and leadership skills, leading to an American Express internship in summer 2023 and ultimately his full‑time role. Beyond coding, Salgueiro co‑owns and serves as CTO of Legacy Boats and actively participates in American Express’s corporate soccer team and other outdoor sports, showcasing his collaborative nature and entrepreneurial spirit. Grateful for graduating debt‑free and supporting his family, he remains open to evolving his career—whether into management or entrepreneurship—while leveraging his blend of technical expertise and interpersonal strengths.
