This page will provide you with information on setting up and verifying your dialup connection to FIU.
You can skip to Mapping a drive, if your internet connection to FIU is already configured and working properly.
2.1 Dial-up Networking Installation
Double click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.
When the My Computer window appears, check to see if the Dial-up Networking icon is present inside the window. (Figure 1)
If the Dial-up Networking icon is present inside the My Computer window, proceed to 2.2, otherwise double click on the Control Panel folder. (Figure 1)
When the Control Panel window appears, double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. (Figure 2)
When the Add/Remove Programs Properties screen appears, click the Windows Setup tab. (Figure 3)
Highlight the Communications option and click the Details button.
When the Communications screen appears, place a check mark to the left of the Dial-up Networking option. (Figure 4)
Click the OK button on the Communications screen.
Click the OK button on the Add/Remove Programs Properties screen.
If Windows 98 prompts you for a specific Windows 98 program disk or the Windows 98 program CD-ROM, go ahead and insert the appropriate Windows 98 program disk or the CD-ROM into the drive and click the OK button.
When Windows prompts you to restart you computer, click on the Yes button.
Proceed to 2.2.
2.2 Dial-up Adapter, TCP/IP Installation and Networking Components
Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
When the My Computer window appears, double click on the Control Panel folder . (Figure 1)
In the Control Panel window, double-click on the Network icon. (Figure 2)
When the Network screen appears, click on the Configuration tab. (Figure 5)
If Dial-Up Adapter , TCP/IP , Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networksare both present in the list box labeled "The following network components are installed", proceed to Samba fix.
If any of these are not present in the list box, follow these directions for installing the components:
Dial-Up Adapter: (If Necessary)
While on the Configuration tab of the Network screen, click Add...
When Select Network Component Type window appears, highlight Adapter from the list box and click on the Add button. (Figure 6)
When the Select Network adapters screen appears, click on Microsoft on the list box labeled "Manufacturers."
Make sure Dial-Up Adapter is selected on the list box labeled "Network Adapters."
Click the OK button to close the Select Network adapters screen.
TCP/IP: (If Necessary)
While on the Configuration tab of the Network screen, click Add...
When Select Network Component Type window appears, highlight Protocolfrom the list box and click on the Add button. (Figure 6)
When the Select Network Protocol screen appears, click on Microsoft on the list box labeled "Manufacturers."
Click on TCP/IPso that it is selected on the list box labeled "Network Protocols."
Click the OK button to close the Select Network Protocol screen.
Client for Microsoft Networks: (If Necessary)
While on the Configuration tab of the Network screen, click Add...
When Select Network Component Type window appears, highlight Client from the list box and click on the Add button.(Figure 6)
When the Select Network Clientscreen appears, click on Microsoft on the list box labeled "Manufacturers."
Click on Client for Microsoft Networks so that it is selected on the list box labeled "Network Clients".
Click the OK button to close the Select Network Clients screen.
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks: (If Necessary)
While on the Configuration tab of the Network screen, click Add...
When Select Network Component Type window appears, highlight Service from the list box and click on the Add button.(Figure 6)
When the Select Network Servicescreen appears, click on File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks so that it is selected.
Click the OK button to close the Select Network Servicescreen.
2.3 Setting Up Dial-Up Networking
Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
When the My Computer window appears, double click on Dial-Up Networking icon (Figure 1)
When the Dial-Up Networking window appears, double click on the Make New Connection icon. (Figure 9)
If the modem has been set up, you will see the Make New Connection screen shown in Figure 10. Otherwise, keep pressing the Next button until the modem is configured properly and you get to the Make New Connection screen shown in Figure 10.
When the Make New Connection screen appears, type Florida International University in the box labeled "Type a name for the computer you are dialing." (Figure 10)
Make sure your make and model of modem is showing in the selection box labeled "Select a modem."
Click the Configure button.
When the modem Properties screen appears, make sure the correct modem speed is showing in the selection box labeled "Maximum Speed" (38400 for a 14.4 modem or 57600 for a 28.8 modem) (Figure 11)
Make sure the correct serial port is showing in the selection box labeled "Port" (Communications Port COM1, COM2, or COM3).
Click on the Connection tab of the modem Properties screen and make sure the Data Bits is 8, Parity is None, and Stop Bits is 1.
Click on the Options tab and make sure the box labeled "Bring up terminal window after dialing" is not checked. (Figure 12)
Click the OK button to close the modem Properties screen.
On the Make New Connection screen, click on the Next button.<
Type 305-348-3282 in the box labeled "Telephone number:"
Click the Next button.
Click the Finish button.
Check to see that the Florida International University icon is present in the Dial-Up Networking window. (Figure 9)
2.4 Dial-Up Networking Properties
Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
When the My Computer window appears, double click on Dial-Up Networking icon (Figure 1)
When the Dial-Up Networking window appears, click on the Florida International University icon with the RIGHT mouse button (you may have to click the LEFT mouse button if your mouse is configured for left-handed users).
When the pop-up menu appears, click on Properties.(Figure 13)
When the Florida International University screen appears, make sure the box labeled "Use country code and area code" is not checked.
Click on the Server Type... button. (Figure 14)
When the Server Types screen appears, make sure PPP: Windows 98, Windows NT 3.5, Internet is showing in the selection box labeled "Type of Dial-Up Server." (Figure 15)
Make sure the box labeled "Log Onto Network" is checked.
Make sure the box labeled "Enable Software Compression" is checked.
Make sure the box labeled "TCP/IP" is checked.
Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
When the TCP/IP Settings screen appears, select "Server Assigned IP Address." (Figure 16)
Select "Specify Name Server Addresses."
Type 131.94.64.4 in the field labeled "Primary DNS."
Type 131.94.128.2 in the field labeled "Secondary DNS."
Leave the Primary and Secondary WINS with 0's.
Make sure the box labeled "Use IP Header Compression" is checked.
Make sure the box labeled "Use Default Gateway on Remote Host" is checked.
Click the OK button.
Click the OK button on the Server Types screen.
Click the OK button on the Florida International University screen.
This scripting step is only necessary if FIU has not provided you with a PPP dialup account and you only have a Solix account. Otherwise, continue on to Samba fix.
Click on the TCP/IP Settings button to see the following window:
Fill in the fields and check the appropriate boxes as indicated.Click OK. Click on the Scripting tab:
click here to dowload the script FIU.scp and place it in c:\program files\accessories\
Click on Browse and select the FIU.scp file in c:\program files\accessories\:
Click Open. Close all open windows until you have only the Dial-Up Networking window open.
Test the Winsock Dial-Up Program by Establishing an Internet Connection:
Open (double-click) the Internet program folder. Double-click on your connection.
Type in the username and password given to you for using the FIU computers (your email username). Verify that the phone number presented reflects your location's requirements (area code, etc.) Click on Connect.
You should hear your modem being activated and a status window showing you the progress of your connection: "Dialing," "Verifying username…," and finally "Connected at …" If you do not succeed in receiving these lines, review the installation procedures.
In normal operation, you may want to minimize the Dial-Up window to keep your Windows 98 desktop less cluttered.
To disconnect your computer from the Internet, click on the Disconnect button in the Dial-Up window. Closing other Internet applications will not necessarily free up your phone line connection.
